Are you a Kennedy or a Blagojevich?

People are scratching their heads over Caroline Kennedy for Senate. Chris Matthews on “Hardball” called Jeb Bush “the intellectual one.” Hillary Clinton brought a certain panache to the presidential race.

What do these three have in common?

Branding.

Like them or not, the very names Kennedy, Bush and Clinton pack big brand awareness. People know the name, know the brand, know what they’re getting.

Years ago, the late Sonny Bono was improbably elected mayor of Palm Springs. His political consultants said it was easy because he had 98% name recognition. He of course went on to serve in Congress. Again, his handlers credited name recognition.
