Worried about what you’re saying when trolling through the ins and outs of social media? Here are a few tips to avoid the all-mighty HIPAA violation!
- Be general. If you’re discussing a complex case or success story, leave out any key identifiers such as patient names, locations or demographic information that could be used to identify someone. Get the full list of PHI identifiers here, and when in doubt get consent. Contact us for a complimentary consent form.
- Aim for patient participation. If your patients want to share stories, photos or testimonials on social media, HIPAA has no problem with that. Encourage your patients to “like” or “follow” you on social media and share their experiences.
- Be careful about sharing. A patient may post something personal on your practice Facebook page, but you should avoid re-tweeting or sharing it on your personal page.
- Think before you post. Once it’s online, it’s there for good. Stop, think and assess whether or not your post shares too much information, includes specific patient information or may be seen as inappropriate. When in doubt, don’t post.
