We asked PR and growth experts on Things Elon Musk Can Teach Us About Public Relations. What are great PR examples implemented by Elon Musk and what can startups learn from those? Here are their answers:
1) Controversy in the PR game
“One of the pillars of Elon Musk’s PR game is controversy. And this is what most startups miss because they stay in their lane. On the other hand, Musk smokes pot on public podcasts, uses flamethrower inside his company (and then sells it), puts one of his cars on the Low Earth Orbit, and smashes Cybertruck windows while on stage. Each of these things was not done (directly) with the intention of generating PR and yet each of them was a powerful stunt that made everyone talk about Musk, Tesla, or SpaceX.” — Jakub Kliszczak, Marketing Specialist at Channels
2) The power of being direct and truthful
“Elon Musk stands out for not overthinking when it comes to communicating. He’s authentic and true to himself. Yes, he’s had his series of tweets, yet the lasting effect is that people believe what he says. By being direct and truthful with your messaging, people will listen to what you have to share — regardless of them agreeing with you or not.” — Samya France, Sr. Director of PR with a specialty in Hispanic markets in and outside of the U.S.
